About our Program

The General Practice Dental Residency Program at Peninsula Hospital Center is in its 44th year. Over 300 alumni of our program are now in practice throughout the United States and Canada. Many of our graduates have gone on to advanced studies in dental specialties and have distinguished themselves in our profession.

Peninsula Hospital Center is a voluntary, community teaching hospital located in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, just south of John F. Kennedy International Airport.  It has a 125 bed acute care facility and a 200 bed center for nursing and rehabilitation. In addition to our eight dental residents, the hospital enrolls 40-50 residents in the fields of surgery, orthopedics and family practice medicine. Peninsula Hospital Center is affiliated with Revival Home Healthcare.

The Department of Dentistry is accredited by the American Dental Association’s Council on Dental Accreditation. The dental clinic facility has seven operatories with a dental assistant assigned to each room.  The operatories are furnished with modern dental chairs, overhead lighting, ultrasonic machines, and dental x-ray units. A digital camera is available for documentation of trauma and pathology cases. Other features include a panoramic radiograph unit, a diode soft tissue laser, as well as mechanized rotary titanium endodontic instrumentation, and Scan-X Digital Radiography.

Our dental staff includes more than a dozen general and specialist dentists. There is abundant didactic material provided both on and off campus.  Off-service rotations include Anesthesiology, Family Practice Medicine, and Emergency Medicine which are of two weeks duration. All residents are expected to become certified in both Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support prior to commencing our program.

The scope of work in our clinical facility spans the spectrum of dentistry. As there are no post-graduate dental specialty programs at our institution, our General Practice Dental Residents get to perform a wide variety of “specialty” procedures under the supervision of our dental specialty staff.  This includes the diagnosis for, placement, and restoration of dental implants, which is a vital part of contemporary dental practice.
